Debunking Common Myths About Gel Nails

by PINKLOTTA 13 May 2026

Gel manicures can be glossy, durable, and nail-friendly—if you apply and remove them correctly. Let’s clear up the most common myths.

Myth 1: "Gel thins natural nails."
Gel doesn’t thin nails on its own. Over-buffing, peeling product, or rushing removal causes damage. Keep layers thin and soak off gently—never pry.

Myth 2: "UV/LED lamps aren’t safe."
Modern nail lamps are designed for brief, controlled exposure. Cure exactly per lamp instructions and avoid extra cycles. Sensitive skin? Shield surrounding skin or use SPF on hands (not on the nail plate).

Myth 3: "Removal always ruins nails."
Damage comes from impatience. Break the top-coat seal, soak with acetone-dampened cotton for 10–15 minutes, then nudge off softened gel. Re-soak rather than scrape.

Myth 4: "HEMA-free means zero allergy risk."
HEMA-free can reduce risk, but no formula is universally allergy-proof. Avoid skin contact, keep coats thin, and discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Myth 5: "Gel is only for long nails."
Short square or almond shapes wear gel beautifully—clean, durable, and practical for daily life.

Best Practices
Prep thoroughly → thin Base Gel → 1–2 thin Color Gel coats → Top Gel. Cap the free edge, cure to lamp specs, and finish with cuticle oil. PinkLotta’s smooth-apply system is optimized for thin, even layers and lasting shine.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
